Incorporating Nature Into Your Home

Incorporating Nature Into Your Home

In our fast paced and technology driven world, it's never been more important to reconnect with nature.
Research has shown that spending time in the great outdoors reduces stress, boosts your mood and improves your general wellbeing. But sometimes we can't always find the time, which is why bringing nature into your home is becoming more and more important.

Here are some simple ways to make your home more green:

Houseplants:

One of the easiest and most impactful ways to bring the outdoors, indoors, is to incorporate houseplants into your decor. They won't only provide a burst of colour to your home but also purify the air and improve your humidity levels.
Consider spider plants, peace lilies, snake plants, or succulents and cactus' which thrive indoors.

Grouping plants together and using plants of different sizes and textures can add to the effect of bringing nature inside.

Natural Materials:

Using natural materials in your home decor instantly brings a sense of the outdoors. Opt for wood, rattan, marble, linen - materials that have an earthy, organic feel. These can be used all over your home from the kitchen to the bedroom.

Wood: using wood whether it be solid wood or veneered, adds warmth and a grainy earthiness to your space. You can incorporate this through your worktops, flooring, wall accents and furniture. Wooden beams are also a beautiful way to give your home a more organic feel.

Stone: having a stone countertop in your kitchen, or marble tiles in your bathroom instantly brings a natural feel to your space. However if these are out of reach, consider marble chopping boards, coasters and display trays to bring the outdoorsy feel in. You could also look for stone effect vases and sculptures to use in more homey rooms like your living room or bedrooms.

Bamboo & Rattan: these materials make for great homewares - think rattan chairs, bamboo chopping boards and woven baskets. They introduce a sense of bohemian countryside living, or a cosy feel when filled with blankets in a living room or bedroom.

Maximise Natural Light:

Allowing in lots of natural light is the simplest and most effective ways to connect your home with nature. Natural light not only improves your mental wellbeing but also gives your home an airy, fresh feel.
Using sheer curtains or Venetian blinds is a great way of keeping your privacy and letting the sunshine filter in. If you don't have many windows, you can also use wall mirrors to help bounce light around your room.

Picking light and brightly coloured walls will also help to reflect the light. We selected Farrow & Ball Skimming Stone for our showroom, which reflects the sun beautifully and gives our space an open and airy feel.

Nature Inspired Colours:

The colour pallet you choose plays a big part in how your home feels. Earthy tones like deep greens, striking blues, and warm neutral tones like browns and taupes mimic the natural world and and bring calmness to your rooms.
These colours can be introduced through soft furnishings, upholstery, wall colours/coverings and smaller accessories like vases and bowls.

Creating an Indoor Herb Garden:

No matter the time of year we always need fresh herbs to spice up our meals. If you have a nice empty space on a windowsill or countertop, a small indoor herb garden is the perfect (and practical) space filler.
Using fresh potted herbs such as basil, thyme, rosemary and mint will not only give your room a beautiful fresh smell but will also give you a great feeling when you get to pick your own homegrown food!
You could also plant these in small hanging pots if you are tight on space.

Natural Scents:

Bring natural scents into your home with candles, reed diffusers, air purifiers and fresh flowers. Fragrances such as lavender, pine, bergamot, eucalyptus and sea salt are known for their calming properties and refreshing smell.
Fresh flowers will bring a burst of colour  to your room as well as a beautiful fresh smell.

Whether it's the calming scent of lavender or the sight of your houseplant growing a new sprout, these small changes can have a big impact not only on your home but also on your overall well-being.
