Tips for Styling your Shelves

Tips for Styling your Shelves

Whether you're working with floating kitchen shelves, alcoves around the fireplace or a full book case in the living room, styling your shelves properly can instantly elevate your space. But we understand - making it look effortless can be hard!

Here's some tips on how to style your shelves like a pro...

Start with a Blank Canvas

Before you begin with your styling and placing, clear everything off of your shelves. Give them a dust and take a step back, this will give you a moment to rethink how you want them to look and see the space with fresh eyes.

Mixing Heights, Materials & Textures

One of the key ingredients to eye-catching shelves is variety. Combining short and tall, smooth and textured, and mixing the materials like wood, glass, marble adds interest to each shelf.
For example, on our bottom shelf we have paired this dimple lamp with linen shade, ceramic bee trinket and white coral. All with different textures and different heights.

The Rule of Three

Grouping products in sets of 3 other than an even number, helps to make your shelves appear more balanced and visually appealing. This also creates a focal point and draws the eye, without it feeling too symmetrical.

Stack & Layer

Stacking books horizontally and using them a pedestals for smaller items like candles, bowls or reed diffusers helps to add depth to your shelves. Leaning framed pictures or artwork behind pieces is another way to do this, as well as giving a 'collected' look.

Add a Pop of Greenery

Plants breathe life not only into the air, but also into your shelves. It could be a trailing pothos, a succulent, or a small and easy to look after moss bowl, a small touch of green adds freshness and softness.

Leave Breathing Room

There is a very fine line between beautiful styling and being cluttered, so the main rule to follow is - don't overfill!
Empty space is just as important as the pieces themselves, and allows each item to stand out without blending in to the rest of the display.

Tell a Story

When you are creating your new shelf display, don't forget to reflect your personality in there! Travel souvenirs, vintage finds, framed photos or just anything special to you is a lovely way to express the things you love alongside your decor.

Styling shelves is a creative process, so don't forget to have some fun with it and remember that it can take time. Step back, snap a photo and move some things around until you're happy.
